Cross Cultural Training Component
Aims
The specific aims of the Training core are:
- To respond to the crisis of health disparities through the development of cross cultural skills among health care providers and researchers by providing cross cultural training and technical assistance of faculty at the UConn School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine and academic departments located in the UConn-Storrs campus.
- Promotion of community-based research and service delivery, including cultural and socio-economic perspectives, among Center and other collaborating scientists
- Provision of community based health research and service experience for undergraduate and graduate students through student internships.
- Promotion of interest in health and nutrition research and service careers among Latino youth through participatory training experiences for high school students.
- Development and dissemination of a cross cultural training model based on best practices for overcoming health disparities through community based diversity training.
Education Component
Aims
The specific aims of the Education core are:
- Coordinate University recruitment efforts for minorities who wish to pursue training in Health Disparities.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate annual strategic plans for recruitment and training efforts
- Provide training in the general area of health disparities, focusing on under-represented minority undergraduate and graduate students.
- Facilitate the incorporation of adequate training components for undergraduate and graduate students in collaboration with the Research and Outreach Cores.
- Provide training in the general area of health disparities to postdoctoral fellows who have earned a PhD degree in the Biomedical, Social, Behavioral or Public Health-based Sciences.
- Provide support to minority junior faculty through training activities in coordination with the Research and Community Connections Cores.
