Shannon Haynes

Shannon Haynes earned her B.S in Dietetics from the Nutritional Sciences Department of the University of Connecticut in 1999. She completed an independent study at the Hispanic Health Council in the summer of 1997 that focused on community nutrition education. From January – July 1998, she studied at the University of Cape Town in South Africa where she completed an independent study in HIV/AIDS Awareness. In 2000, she went on to Keene State College to complete her Dietetic Internship, which focused on community wellness education. As part of her Dietetic Internship, she completed an independent project with HIV positive men in nutrition education and food insecurity. She then became a Registered Dietitian and Certified Lactation Counselor as she worked with the diverse refugee community through the WIC program in Portland, Maine. In 2002, she moved on to work for the Penobscot Nation Health Department in Maine. Here she performed nutrition education within the community, managed an organic community garden and a community health survey, as well as authored and edited the department’s health newsletter entitled, “To Our Health”. She continues to write this newsletter from Connecticut.  She also consults for LEARN in Old Lyme, Connecticut for the Eat Smart, Grow Healthy Coalition, as well as teaches nutrition classes for various parks and recreation departments. In addition, she has been a part-time adjunct faculty member for Three Rivers Community and Technical College in Norwich, Connecticut.
